Adrian Hirst

Adrian comes from Skelmanthorpe , midway between Huddersfield and Barnsley in West Yorkshire. He started to play the piano when seven years old and, when he was  14,  his younger brother Chris was learning to play the trombone. Thankfully for Black Dyke this tempted Adrian to take up the instrument. His only tutor in his whole brass-playing career was Les Hepplestone (originally a cornet player) musical director of Wakefield Metropolitan Youth Band, where Adrian was a member.

Katrina Marzella

Katrina Marzella has been hailed as the leading baritone horn player of her generation. Her musical development owes much to the rich brass band heritage she encountered growing up in West Lothian, Scotland. Katrina now lives in Manchester and has played with many of the UK’s most accomplished bands.

Daniel Thomas

Daniel Thomas hails from Rhymney in the South Wales valleys. He initially played percussion, but an obvious lack of promise soon facilitated a change to the euphonium when he was thirteen! He signed up for peripatetic brass lessons at Abertillery Comprehensive School, where his father also taught I.T.  His first band was the now reformed Ebbw Vale Town Band, a local fourth section band who regularly came recruiting into local schools. He enjoyed two years with the band, sitting next to Grimethorpe's current second euphonium, Christian Dullea!

Zoe Hancock

Zoe Hancock started playing the flugel horn at the very young age of 6, when she attended the learners group of her local village band in the clay mining area of St Dennis. She soon progressed through to the Youth Band and at the age of 9 played her first contest with the young and revitalised St Dennis Senior Band. Zoe’s passion grew more as she started competing in Solo Contests throughout Cornwall and won many prizes. During her time with St Dennis, the band gained promotion from the Fourth to Championship section within six years.
