Daniel Thomas hails from Rhymney in the South Wales valleys. He initially played percussion, but an obvious lack of promise soon facilitated a change to the euphonium when he was thirteen! He signed up for peripatetic brass lessons at Abertillery Comprehensive School, where his father also taught I.T. His first band was the now reformed Ebbw Vale Town Band, a local fourth section band who regularly came recruiting into local schools. He enjoyed two years with the band, sitting next to Grimethorpe's current second euphonium, Christian Dullea!
Zoe Hancock started playing the flugel horn at the very young age of 6, when she attended the learners group of her local village band in the clay mining area of St Dennis. She soon progressed through to the Youth Band and at the age of 9 played her first contest with the young and revitalised St Dennis Senior Band. Zoe’s passion grew more as she started competing in Solo Contests throughout Cornwall and won many prizes. During her time with St Dennis, the band gained promotion from the Fourth to Championship section within six years.

Siobhan Bates – Principal Tenor Horn
Siobhan, found she could get a decent sound out of a brass instrument when she was just 3 years old and by 5 she was playing the French Horn and Tenor Horn in the Brass and Wind Bands of the South Derbyshire Music Centre, based near her home in Swadlincote, Derbyshire.
At age 10 she auditioned and gained a place at the Birmingham Junior Conservatoire on French Horn until she was 15, eventually playing Principal Horn in the orchestras and ensembles there
My passion for brass lies deep within the brass band community. Having held the position of Principal Cornet with the Harrogate Band aged 19, I quickly progressed into top level banding aged 21, when I joined the Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band on front row. From there, I was able to spread my wings, accept a seat within the cornet section of the Black Dyke Band in November 2009 and have never looked back.
