News of the passing of Duncan Beckley MBE on the 27th September at the age of 66 has deeply saddened all within the brass band movement. This sense of loss is keenly felt by the Black Dyke Band family, for whom Duncan was a friend, mentor, faithful supporter and guide.

Duncan was a beacon of inspiration, rooted in his Yorkshire upbringing and nurtured by his love for brass banding. His journey in music culminated in an MBE in 2024, a testament to the passion and dedication he poured into every note. While his impressive tally of competition victories stands as a testament to his extraordinary talent, it was his unwavering support and encouragement that was truly inspirational. He was committed not just to excellence in music but to nurturing friendships and fostering growth within our community.

Duncan faced challenges with remarkable fortitude. His journey was not without obstacles, yet he met them with professionalism and grace, becoming a role model for generations of musicians who followed in his footsteps. His 27-year tenure as Musical Director of Newstead Band and 15 years with Horbury Victoria were marked by an infectious enthusiasm that inspired all involved to push the boundaries of music making further, and still further.

As a valued member of the Association of Brass Band Adjudicators and a trustee of both the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain and a trustee of our beloved Black Dyke Band, Duncan’s insights were invaluable. His recognition with the Mortimer Medal in 2022 and the MBE in 2024 celebrated his commitment to social inclusion and education within the brass band movement, highlighting his dedication to both youth and community bands.

Duncan’s contributions extended beyond conducting; he was an esteemed educator, holding degrees from prestigious institutions and a PGCE qualification. His influence as a teacher shaped countless musicians, instilling in them the same love and respect for music that he held.

As we reflect on Duncan’s life and legacy, our thoughts are with his wife Rachel and his family during this difficult time. He may have departed from us, but his spirit will forever resonate within the fabric of the Black Dyke Band and the broader brass banding community. Duncan Beckley was truly a friend, an example, and an inspiration to us all.

RIP Duncan, we are all going to miss you.
