After 20 illustrious years, Richard Marshall has decided to relinquish his position as Principal Cornet with Black Dyke.
Richard commented “Back in 1985, when my Dad took me to Queensbury and the Black Dyke Band room, my dream was to sit in the Principal Cornet Chair and share the same seat as many of my cornet heroes. From that point covering 40 years of playing, and with 2 British Open, 2 European, and 4 National Championship titles achieved, I feel I have left a legacy to be proud of and carried the role with humility, dedication and integrity”.

Black Dyke’s Music Director commented, “Richard has been an outstanding soloist and one of the leading cornet players of his generation. His solo recordings have received international critical acclaim and he has led the cornet section at Black Dyke with distinction, and every player in the band wishes Richard success in his ongoing musical life”.
Richard concluded by saying, “Now it’s time to enter a new chapter of my life as I journey into conducting in the middle of a band rather than being principal on the end chair. To all the past and present members that I have shared the stage with and the Trustees at Black Dyke, the band will always be close to my heart and to Nick Childs, thank you for the best 20 years.”
In the words of the Black Dyke motto, “Justum Perficito Nihil Timeto” (Act Justly And Fear Nothing).
Richard’s final concert will be at Huddersfield Town Hall on 21st December, where the band will make a special presentation to mark Richards 20 years, acknowledging him as the longest serving Principal Cornet player in Black Dyke history.
