Black Dyke Band is delighted to announce that Philip Varley will join the Queensbury-based band on Solo Cornet, bringing his considerable experience and musical talent to Black Dyke.
Philip began his musical journey with Elland Youth Band, studying under the legendary James Shepherd. In 2010, he followed James to Diggle Band as Principal Cornet and also joined the reformed James Shepherd Versatile Brass.
Since 2013, Philip has enjoyed 13 wonderful years with Hammonds Band, initially on Repiano Cornet before progressing to Principal Cornet following the completion of his master’s degree.
A memorable highlight came in 2017 when Philip celebrated second place at the Yorkshire Regional Championships and received the award for Best Principal Cornet. The occasion was particularly special as his sister, Helen, was playing First Horn with Black Dyke Band, who secured first place.
Black Dyke’s Director of Music commented: “Philip is an excellent player who will be a real asset to the band. We look forward to welcoming him following the completion of his commitments with Hammonds at the end of November.”
Philip added: “I’d like to thank all my friends at Hammonds, particularly Morgan Griffiths, for the wonderful memories. I’m really excited about this next chapter with Nick and Black Dyke.”
Philip’s first official concert with Black Dyke will take place in Halifax on 29 November.
