A Concert Tour to Remember

The Black Dyke Band, a name for many decades synonymous with musical excellence, recently embarked on an exhilarating concert tour in Japan, commencing on the 26th of October. Departing from Manchester and making a brief stopover in Hong Kong, the band members were infused with an atmosphere of excitement and anticipation. However, lingering in the back of their minds was a concern that has haunted many touring musicians: the fate of their precious instruments. Fortunately, this time, the band’s fears were laid to rest as all players and their instruments arrived in Japan intact and on schedule!

A Triumphant Start in Kitakyushu

Day 2 marked the musical beginning of the tour, with a performance in the stunning Hibiki Hall in Kitakyushu. The venue, known for its breathtaking acoustics and splendid architecture, was filled to capacity with an enthusiastic audience. As the concert concluded the band was rewarded with the first standing ovation of the trip, a testament to the band’s artistry combined with the deep appreciation of the Japanese audience. Each of our players felt genuinely humbled by the overwhelming support and were thrilled to engage with fans, sharing stories, signing many autographs and forging new friendships that transcended all cultural boundaries.

Illuminating the NHK Festival in Tokyo

On Day 3, the band found themselves in the vibrant heart of Tokyo, participating in the prestigious NHK festival at the iconic NHK Hall. This event, akin to the renowned Last Night of the Proms in the UK, always features some of the world’s finest musicians and conductors, this year it was the turn of Black Dyke! The atmosphere was electric as the band performed before nearly 3,500 audience members and live TV, its music echoing through the expansive auditorium. Several principal players had the opportunity to be interviewed for broadcast purposes, adding an extra layer of excitement to the experience. A rigorous two-hour camera rehearsal preceded the concert, ensuring that the performance would be nothing short of extraordinary, and it most certainly was!

Experiencing Japan’s Bullet Train

Day 4 ushered in a new adventure as the band hopped aboard Japan’s legendary bullet train, traveling from Tokyo to the Sakura Hall in Kitami. The Japanese railway system stands as a testament to the nation’s commitment to efficiency and innovation, and the band marveled at the speed and comfort of their journey. Upon arrival in Kitami, they were once again greeted by an enthusiastic crowd, further solidifying their growing special connection with the Japanese audience.

A Day of Leisure and Exploration

After a whirlwind of concerts, Day 5 offered a much-deserved day of rest. Band members took the opportunity to explore, with some indulging in street car racing, albeit in unconventional attire (!), while others visited iconic landmarks such as the Tokyo Sky Tree. This day of leisure allowed the players to recharge and soak in the rich culture and vibrant atmosphere of Japan, forging memories that would last a lifetime.

Focusing on Education and Empowerment

Back to business on Day 6, the band prepared for their fourth concert, this time at the Sumida Triphony Hall in Tokyo. This concert had an educational focus, with a predominantly young audience eager to experience the magic of live music. Japan Arts graciously treated the band to a delightful dinner, fostering a sense of camaraderie and appreciation among musicians and hosts alike.

The Penultimate Concert Experience

Day 7 saw the band embarking on a three-hour coach journey to Matsumoto City, where they were set to perform in The Harmony Hall. The anticipation was palpable as the band prepared for their penultimate concert, eager to make the most of their remaining time in this enchanting country.

A Grand Finale in Tokyo

Finally, on Day 8, the Black Dyke Band returned to the Sumida Triphony Hall for their last concert. The acoustics of the venue were nothing short of magical, and the audience, a perfect blend of music lovers, provided a fitting climax to the tour. The band reflected on the highlights of their journey: the encouragement and warmth of the fans, the joy of performing to 1,200 schoolchildren, the beautiful sights and sounds of Japan, and, of course, the delectable cuisine that accompanied their travels.

As the tour came to a close, the band members carried with them not only memories of incredible performances but also the friendships formed and the cultural connections made. Japan had once again embraced them with open arms, and the Black Dyke Band left with their hearts full, eager to return someday to this remarkable land.
