Course Description

Siobhan Bates, one of the country’s great Tenor Horn players is your teacher and sets you on the right path from the word go – you couldn’t be in better hands. In this course, Siobhan takes you through all the basics in simple, easily understood steps. From posture and breathing, to producing your first notes, playing scales, different notes and simple pieces, this ten-video course is designed to give you the very best start to enjoying playing the Tenor Horn. You don’t need to have previous musical experience, as Siobhan guides you through understanding your chosen instrument works, reading music and understanding time signatures.

At the end of the course, you will be able to play for your own enjoyment and for others too. The lessons are both instructive and fun, and we’re sure that when you have completed the course, your enthusiasm will lead on to more learning and a fantastic musical adventure with the Tenor Horn – who knows, maybe even as part of a band!

01.

Posture and Breathing

To start we focus on posture & breathing. We will also look at how to produce a sound before learning your first notes, C and D.

New Notes

After a brief recap we will learn three new notes, E, F and G. We will explore the first five notes that you have learnt.

03.

Note lengths and time signatures

We will help you to understand a 4/4 time signature. We will also look at some simple note lengths such as crotchets and minims.

04.

A new note

Now that we have 5 notes, let’s learn a new one, the note A. We will also explore the 2/4 time signature.

05.

Your first scale!

Today we will learn your first scale! A minor is the first scale you can learn now that you know C, D, E, F, G and A.

Another new note

Let’s learn a new note, the note B. We also look at 3/4 time.

Hitting the Heights!

We will learn the highest note in the Beginner series - A middle C. With this new note, we can also learn the C Major scale and arpeggio.

Looking at flats

I will introduce you to your first flat scale, Bb Major, which has 2 flats, as well as improving on your lip flexibility.

From flats to sharps

Now that we know a scale with 2 flats, lets learn a scale with 2 sharps - D Major. We will also start on some sight-reading practise.
