Joseph Fawcett

Mr. Joseph Fawcett was only thirteen years old when he began learning the play the trombone, but he soon made a name for himself. He was solo trombonist in the Saltaire Brass Band when they won the first prize at Crystal Palace in 1862. For nearly four years he was the conductor of the famous Black Dike Band, and in the ‘seventies and ‘eighties acted as adjudicator in brass band contests in various parts of the country. He was one of the founders of the Bradford Permanent Orchestra, in which he played for a long time. He was choirmaster at the Eccleshill Congregational Church for over thirty years, and still acts as conductor of the scholars on Whit Monday – duties which he has discharged for nearly fifty years. The Eccleshill Glee Union have had Mr. Fawcett as the conductor ever since the formation of the society, and some time ago the Idle Musical Union made him a life-member. At the concert held in Eccleshill on January 15th 1900, to raise money for the reservist war fund, Mr. Fawcett was presented with an ivory baton as a mark of esteem. Some time ago a large photograph of Mr. Fawcett was unveiled at the Station Hotel, Eccleshill, headquarters of the Eccleshill Glee Union.’
