Jack Pinches of Queensbury must be regarded as somewhat of a prodigy for on January 1st 1938 he took his place as the principal trombone of Black Dyke Mills Band at the age of 15 years and 8 months. It was on July 1st 1937 that he was drafted from the junior band to play second trombone in the senior band. In this position he accompanied the band on its southern tour and also competed at the Bugle, Belle Vue and Crystal Palace contests.

He commenced his career by joining the junior band when he was eleven. His progress was so rapid that he played solo trombone at the Crystal Palace aged 13 years. In October 1935 he was engaged by the BBC to broadcast from the Leeds studios.

He was the second son of Harold Pinches who won fame as the principal cornet (c1913-1925) player of the Black Dyke Mills Band and part of Jack’s rapid progress is down to his father’s tuition, his own efforts and a lot of talent and also to the fact Hayden Robinson the Black Dyke Mills principal trombonist standing aside to allow Jack to take the principal’s chair. During WWII hr bacame a ‘Bevan Boy’ and played principal trombone for Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band. On leaving brass bands he became a brass teacher for the prestigious Eton College, and died c: 1982.
