John Clough was born in Bradford, Yorkshire, and started playing the cornet at the age of eleven. Eighteen months later he was playing solo cornet with the Highfield School Band, and, in 1953 he was appointed principal cornet with the Bradford Victoria Band, a position he held for seven years except for a two-year break for army service with the 5th Royal Inniskillen Dragoon Guards. John was a founder member of the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain (NYBBGB). In 1960 he joined the Black Dyke Mills Band, after a short spell on baritone he was appointed principal euphonium player in January 1964.
